Large oil spill in Port of Aarhus
Last Friday at 21.19 o’clock a large oil spill happened in the Port of Aarhus’ turning basin 3 and 4 while the bunkering of a container ship took place at the port. 5-10 m3 of oil leaked on the quayside and into to the turning basin.
"The oil spill did not have major consequences for the port, as it happened while the port was shut down for business for the weekend. It is only the one ship it has had consequences for, "said harbourmaster, Jakob Flyvbjerg Christensen, to TV2 ØSTJLLAND on Saturday.
The Police, fire department, environmental protection, and the Emergency Management Agency were called to the scene and flood barriers were put up. Over the weekend, the oil has been cleaned up. It is unknown how long this task will take.
The fire department, environmental protection, and the Emergency Management Agency were still working on the scene on Sunday. According to the harbourmaster, the spill does not have major consequences for the Port of Aarhus, though there might be small amounts of oil film a few places in the port.
The container ship was supposed to sail the Faeroe Islands on Friday afternoon, but was in quarantine in the Port of Aarhus in order to be cleaned for oil. It has since been allowed to resume the sailing. The East Jutland Police is still investigating the cause of the incident.
