Danish government icebreakers for sale

05-12-2012 12:00:00

The three former state icebreakers Thorbjørn, Danbjørn and Isbjørn will after the adoption of the new Law on icebreaking in Danish waters be sold to the highest bidder. It is unlikely that the buyer will be Danish.

"I have no idea who might sign up as a buyer, and what the price will be. Maybe they can work in the Gulf of Bothnia or equally cold waters”, said Social Democratic Party defense spokesman Bjarne Laustsen to Nordjyske.dk.

The three state icebreakers are currently based in Frederikshavn. They have not been in action at the same the past 16 years, but they have been taken well care of. In all the years in action they have had a permanent crew of four men to care for them all year round.
